A closer look
One of the largest pyramids on Earth hides under a colonial church. In Cholula, Mexico, what looks like a grassy hill topped with a picturesque chapel is actually a massive ancient structure layered by centuries of construction. The Great Pyramid of Cholula has a base larger than Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza, but erosion, vegetation, and later buildings disguised it. Locals told stories of a man-made mountain, yet it took modern archaeology to confirm the scale. Spanish conquerors likely built the church on top as a symbolic act, stamping their faith over a sacred pre-Hispanic centre. Walking the tunnels today feels like moving through swallowed history, where one civilization literally sits on the shoulders of another, pretending the foundation is just part of the landscape.
