A closer look
Evolution decided that looking like a discarded, soggy prune was the ultimate survival tactic. High in the Andes, the Telmatobius culeus frog lives in an oxygen-deprived aquatic nightmare. To survive this extreme high-altitude environment, the frog completely ditched relying on its tiny lungs. Instead, it evolved an incredibly complex hemoglobin system and massive, excessive folds of skin to absorb oxygen directly from the water. When oxygen gets particularly low, they do rhythmic push-ups on the lake floor to stir up currents.
