A closer look

Before you complain about the modern games lacking polish, realize you were spared dozens of extra hours of grinding purely by a technical memory limit. The internal index of Pokemon Red and Blue shows the developers had designed up to 190 monsters for the first generation. Because the original Game Boy cartridge only had a pitiful amount of space, they had to brutally execute over 40 of their darlings. Many of these scrapped, pixelated rejects were recycled years later into the Johto region for Gold and Silver.
