A closer look
Building heavily reinforced structures on seemingly solid, densely packed earth is generally smart until intense vibrations enter the equation. During massive localized shaking, tightly compacted dirt particles briefly lose physical contact with each other, forcing groundwater to violently rush into the newly formed microscopic gaps. The intense pressure instantly transforms the reliable, rock-solid foundation into a deeply unsupportive slurry, causing heavy buildings to simply sink awkwardly straight down into the newly created mud.
