Feudal Japan was a terrifying place to go for an evening walk. Samurai had a legally permitted practice called "tsujigiri" (crossroads killing). When a warrior got a brand new katana, he needed to make sure it could slice through a human body cleanly. So, he would literally just wait at an intersection and execute a random, defenseless commoner.
