Distance limits on mobile networks are hardcoded into the architecture. A mobile tower fundamentally refuses to communicate with a handset past a specific radius due to internal timing restrictions. Even if you stood on a perfectly flat mountain with an immense antenna, the tower would aggressively drop the signal because the response simply took too long to arrive.
