Whaling ships spent years at sea

Chasing giant marine mammals was not a quick weekend excursion. Ships regularly departed port and did not return for up to four consecutive years. Crews lived in constant stench, enduring brutal isolation and terrifying storms, just to boil down blubber to keep reading lamps lit back home.
