Elephant ancestors evolved bizarre elongated snouts before developing useful trunks

Before elephants figured out how to develop their incredibly useful, flexible trunks, their ancestors had to go through a deeply embarrassing transitional phase. Palaeomastodon tried to bridge the gap by featuring a bizarrely elongated upper lip and snout combination that looked far less majestic and far more like a permanent, unfortunate facial swelling.
