Kabuki makeup turns character traits into color-coded lines

Subtlety is wildly overrated in traditional Kabuki. Performers paint their faces with a style called Kumadori, which relies on starkly colored lines to spoon-feed the audience exact character traits. Red stripes mean the guy is a passionate hero, while blue indicates he is a villainous creep. It is essentially an aggressive, painted-on personality test so nobody has to guess who the bad guy is.
