This eyeliner was made from lamp soot

Buying eyeliner at a store is ridiculous when you can scrape it off a burning wick. Surma, or kajal, was traditionally produced by catching the thick, black soot emanating from an oil lamp onto a metal plate, mixing it with cooling pastes, and applying it heavily along the waterlines of the eyes. It produced a flawlessly dark, incredibly intense look born entirely out of fire and ash.
