A closer look

Hummingbirds have a metabolism so aggressively high that they must frantically consume half their body weight in pure sugar every single day just to avoid starving to death within a matter of hours. Their tiny hearts can beat well over a thousand times a minute while actively flying, effectively keeping them teetering on the absolute edge of a catastrophic cardiovascular collapse at all times. To survive the night without eating, they enter a terrifying state of daily hibernation called torpor, plummeting their body temperature and completely shutting down to stubbornly conserve the tiny amount of energy they have left. They are essentially flying sugar addicts trapped in a perpetual state of biological panic, making our mid-afternoon caffeine crashes look like a relaxing day at the spa for a bird constantly just one missed flower away from a catastrophic metabolic failure
