A closer look
Vultures purposely urinate and defecate on their own legs to cool down on hot days in a deeply unsanitary process called urohidrosis. Since birds do not have sweat glands, evaporating this highly acidic liquid off their scaly skin acts as a makeshift air conditioning system. As a delightful bonus, the corrosive acid in their waste kills off the dangerous bacteria they pick up while standing inside rotting animal carcasses. While we spend our summers complaining about the heat and buying expensive iced coffees, vultures have mastered the art of weaponizing their own bathroom breaks to survive scorching temperatures. It is both an absolute triumph of biological engineering and the single most disgusting survival strategy on the planet. Truly, nothing asserts dominance in the animal kingdom quite like aggressively pissing on yourself to simultaneously beat the heat and sanitize your feet
