Nell Shipman didn't have time for Hollywood's restrictive studio system or pesky safety regulations. She created her own independent production company in the remote wilderness and acted alongside fully grown, barely trained bears and cougars. Predictably, feeding a personal zoo of deadly predators bankrupted her, but at least she didn't have to negotiate contracts with demanding human co-stars.
