Long before other famous navigators were puttering around in tiny caravels, Asian maritime fleets were launching genuine wooden behemoths. The treasure ships of the Ming dynasty were constructed at an almost completely absurd scale, functioning as floating diplomatic fortresses capable of carrying thousands of men and vast cargo. They were basically the ancient equivalent of parking a massive aircraft carrier off a foreign coast.
