A closer look
In a masterclass of unethical cruelty, Wendell Johnson decided orphans were acceptable collateral damage for a thesis. He isolated perfectly normal-speaking children and subjected them to relentless psychological belittlement, constantly telling them they were developing horrible stutters. The trauma was so severe that many of these previously healthy kids developed lifelong speech impediments and severe social anxiety. The 'Monster Study' proved that harsh criticism is literally a biological weapon.
