Why traffic lights use red to mean stop

Red didn't become the universal color for 'stop' just because it looks like angry blood. It’s actually a stroke of optical physics. The color red has the longest wavelength on the visible spectrum, meaning it can cut right through fog, rain, and dust without scattering. When early railroad engineers needed a warning light that wouldn't blur out during a storm, red was objectively the only scientific choice.
