Standard protective eyewear wasn't born in a high-tech facility, but in a chaotic classroom. In the 1880s, a teacher named Powell Johnson watched a science experiment go terribly wrong, nearly blinding his students. Horrified by the lack of protection, he patched together two layers of wire mesh and cloth, successfully patenting the very first pair of dedicated safety goggles for dangerous work.
