Plugging an exposed metal cable into a device covered in dripping wet toothpaste is a spectacularly bad idea. To avoid electrocuting you, the charger creates an alternating magnetic field that transfers energy right through the solid plastic casing. It wastes a ton of electricity just so you can safely drop it into a puddle of water.
