A closer look
Gastric brooding frogs, a now-extinct species from Australia, had a deeply disturbing method of raising their young by turning their own stomachs into a biological nursery. The female would swallow her own fertilized eggs, completely shut down the production of her stomach acid, and just stop eating for six weeks while the tadpoles developed inside her belly. When they were finally fully grown, she would vigorously projectile vomit fully formed baby frogs out of her mouth into the world. You have to respect an amphibian that looked at traditional parenting and decided the best approach was to become a living incubator and then violently regurgitate her children. While human mothers certainly suffer through nine months of pregnancy and painful labor, at least they do not have to literally barf out a dozen squirming teenagers just to keep the species alive
