A closer look
Traditional rocket nozzles look like bells, and they are incredibly inefficient because they only work perfectly at one specific atmospheric pressure. An aerospike engine violently flips the nozzle inside out, firing exhaust against a central spike. As altitude changes, the ambient atmospheric pressure organically acts as the outer wall of the engine, constantly compressing the exhaust perfectly all the way from sea level to the complete vacuum of space.
