Sonic was slowed down by the Sega Genesis

Sega's entire marketing campaign revolved around 'Blast Processing' and unrivaled speed, which was mostly a lie to hide their console's panic attacks. Yuji Naka originally programmed Sonic to run much faster, but the poor Sega Genesis hardware physically couldn't pull the level assets from the cartridge quickly enough, resulting in the game crashing if the blue blur went at his actual top speed.
