Why cartoon explosions leave only black soot

Being caught directly in the center of a massive blast in a cartoon universe has absolutely zero long-term medical consequences. Instead of actual physical damage, characters simply endure a split second of shock before appearing entirely covered in black soot with their eyes blinking through the ash, entirely ready for the next scene.
