A closer look
There is a midnight game in Japan that people swear you should never play twice, because the second time the doll already knows where you hide. The ritual is called one-man hide and seek: you cut open a stuffed toy, fill it with uncooked rice and a strand of your own hair, then sew it shut and stab it with a needle. At exactly 3 a.m., you soak the doll in a bathtub, turn off every light, and whisper your own name to it three times before announcing that you are now the seeker. Legend says that by mixing your DNA with the doll and offering it rice, you invite a wandering spirit to borrow its body. Players report hearing wet footsteps, TVs flicking on by themselves, knives moved from where they were left. The final rule is the creepiest: when you find the doll again, you must pour salt water in your mouth and spit it on the toy without swallowing. If you swallow, the spirit is said to move from the doll into you.
