Long before progressive rock bands were writing hour-long odysseys about space wizards, folk musicians were quietly inventing the concept album. Woody Guthrie released 'Dust Bowl Ballads' in 1940, a collection of songs specifically unified around the singular thematic struggle of the American Dust Bowl. It completely shattered the notion that an album was merely a random compilation of unrelated singles.
