Early fiber optic cables were made of spun glass

Before we used it to stream endless cat videos, sending light through glass was just a Victorian-era parlour trick. Nineteenth-century physicists discovered that light could perfectly follow the curved path of a stream of water or spun glass, entirely accidentally laying the groundwork for modern broadband.
