We are basically just living on a giant rusty cannonball. While the crust is mostly oxygen and silicon, a solid third of Earth’s total mass is just heavy iron, with the vast majority violently swirling around in the planetary core. This molten metal dynamo generates the magnetic field keeping us from frying in solar radiation.
