A closer look
Mapping the surface of Mars and the Moon has been done in far greater detail than mapping the bottom of our own oceans on Earth. More than eighty percent of the ocean remains unmapped, unobserved, and completely unexplored, hiding beneath crushing pressures and absolute darkness that make deep-sea exploration a logistical nightmare. Humanity has sent rovers to drive around on a desolate red rock millions of miles away, but we are too terrified or poorly funded to look at what is lurking in the Mariana Trench. It is classic human avoidance behavior to aggressively search for life in the freezing vacuum of outer space just so we do not have to confront whatever Lovecraftian horrors are swimming around in our own basement
