Why Ye Olde was never pronounced Ye
HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART
Before early imported printing presses ruined everything with standardization, Old English utilized a letter called thorn, which made a 'th' sound. Because the presses lacked the character, printers lazily substituted it with a 'y', leading generations of insufferable tourists to pronounce 'Ye Olde' with a literal 'Y' instead of 'The'. It was never 'Ye', just terrible historical typography.
