How a spinning gear measured human hearing

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Before oscilloscopes or digital audio existed, Félix Savart measured the pitch limits of human hearing by literally slapping a card against a spinning brass gear. By calculating the number of teeth on his wheel and the speed of its rotation, he could pinpoint exact acoustic frequencies based purely on how fast the card was vibrating. It was essentially the world's most scientific bicycle spoke.
