In 1897, the Indiana State Legislature actually debated a bill that would legally declare the mathematical value of Pi to be exactly 3.2. A crank mathematician convinced politicians it was a brilliant discovery. The bill only died because a real mathematics professor happened to be in the building and aggressively shamed them out of passing it.
