They sell glass lanterns filled with living shadows—people say they are fragments of memories stolen from the living. Each purchase comes with a warning: never open the lantern indoors, lest the shade recognize its former home and never leave. Locals still claim that once, after a visiting outsider broke one open for curiosity’s sake, his silhouette vanished from all photos. On the next eclipse, a stall appeared selling a lantern that flickered in his shape.
