The card game that derailed millions of main quests was cobbled together during a frantic, hygienic brainstorming session. CD Projekt Red needed a tavern minigame for The Witcher 3 after deciding a simple dice game wasn't engaging enough. Two developers, Damien Monnier and Rafał Jaki, were given a strict deadline of three days to invent something entirely new. They supposedly came up with the mechanics of Gwent while sitting in a bathtub. The result was so paralyzingly addictive that they eventually had to release it as a standalone title.
