If you think your hometown drama is intense, try living in 1534 Münster. Radical Anabaptists decided to flip the city into a hyper-violent, apocalyptic utopia. A charismatic tailor declared himself the 'King of New Jerusalem', legalized polygamy, and abolished all money. The Catholic Church obviously despised this, besieged the city, starved them out, and hung the mutilated bodies of the cult leaders in iron cages from a church steeple—cages that are still hanging there today.
