Boiling liquids into vapor extracts the literal soul
Turning liquid into steam was historically viewed as violently ripping the soul out of a fluid. Distillation required boiling concoctions until they turned into vapor, which would then condense into a purer liquid. It was a beautiful metaphor for ascending to a higher plane, frequently interrupted by glass flasks exploding under pressure.
