The tzompantli was essentially ancient propaganda built from human remains. Aztecs displayed the heavily pierced skulls of sacrificed captives on gigantic wooden scaffolding right in the center of their capital. It was a highly effective architectural intimidation tactic to ensure visiting diplomats fully understood the local power dynamics.
