Some snowboarders saw the comfortable boots of their peers and aggressively chose suffering instead. Alpine snowboarding, focused entirely on high-speed downhill carving, uses hard plastic shells nearly identical to ski boots. The intense rigidity allows them to hold a sharp edge on solid ice, sacrificing all ankle mobility in the name of drawing perfect lines in the snow.
