Before he was highly romanticized as a terrifying sea-spirit guarding the bottom of the ocean, the legendary figure was likely just a completely awful British bartender. Historians heavily suspect Davy Jones was a 16th-century pub owner who routinely drugged his sailors' ale. He would securely lock the unconscious men in a locker and violently sell them into forced servitude on passing ships.
