Despite the romantic idea of a lone traveler walking from one side of the continent to the other, almost nobody ever did that. The famous trade network operated exactly like a massive postal relay system. Goods would be passed from middleman to middleman across local desert stretches, meaning the cargo traveled thousands of miles while the actual merchants just walked back and forth in their own backyards.
