When the Luftwaffe started dropping explosives on London during WWII, the government initially told people to stay out of the subway. Londoners ignored this terrible advice, bought platform tickets, and moved in anyway. Eventually relenting, the authorities instituted Operation Pied Piper, transforming the deep-level Tube stations into sprawling subterranean dormitories. The transport system doubled as a bunker city complete with bunk beds, medical posts, and designated bathroom trains. Because nothing says 'keep calm and carry on' like sleeping on a concrete platform while hoping the tunnel ceiling holds.
