Why cheetahs sometimes abandon their kills

Being the fastest land mammal comes with a heavily frustrating downside. Their explosive sprints require so much immediate energy that after a successful takedown, they are often entirely too tired to actually consume the prize. They routinely just lay next to their catch, panting helplessly while other opportunistic scavengers casually stroll up and steal their dinner.
