Fungi do not strictly need soft soil to thrive. Certain mycorrhizal networks secrete powerful acids that slowly dissolve solid stone to access trapped microscopic nutrients. They are essentially mining operations run by thread-like organisms, casually degrading mountains just to feed their neighboring trees.
