Why the US built a fake town for a nuclear test

Sometimes the military has entirely too much money and an intense desire to blow up a suburb. During the Cold War, the US constructed 'Survival Town' out in the Nevada desert, completely furnished with fake houses, mannequins, and canned food. The sole cynical purpose was to drop an actual nuclear weapon on it just to see what would happen to the mannequins' perfectly pressed outfits.
