A closer look
Stephen King completely despised Stanley Kubrick's cinematic adaptation of his terrifying novel The Shining, publicly criticizing the legendary director for stripping the story of its emotional core and changing the ending entirely. King was especially furious about the portrayal of Wendy Torrance as a weak, screaming victim rather than the resilient protector he wrote, and he even went so far as to produce his own wildly inferior television miniseries adaptation just to prove a point. It is a fantastic reminder that even when a visionary director crafts what is universally considered a masterpiece of modern horror cinema, the original author is still fully capable of sitting in the corner and bitterly complaining that they didn't do it right
