Curtains are pathetic compared to a free-standing mural. Byobu are wildly elaborate, multi-paneled folding screens utilized explicitly to divide rooms and block annoying breezes. Because leaving a giant piece of paper blank is unacceptable, they were routinely covered in continuous, sprawling masterworks of ink and pigment, turning basic home insulation into a literal museum exhibit.
