Creating a shiny bowl shouldn't require risking a massive allergic reaction, but that never stopped traditional artisans. The sap used to coat wooden items is essentially liquid poison ivy. They painted it on, let it dry, polished it, and repeated the agonizing process up to two hundred times to build an indestructible, glossy finish that outlives the artist.
