The ultimate symbol of fierce Scottish independence is a modern corporate invention. While Highlanders wore large, un-tailored blanket garments, the recognizable pleated short kilt was invented in the 1720s by Thomas Rawlinson, an English ironworks owner. He just wanted a safer, less bulky uniform for his Scottish factory workers, accidentally creating an enduring national identity in the process.
