How filmmakers keep a moving face in focus

Keeping a sprinting protagonist perfectly sharp on a high-end lens is mathematically brutal. Before the take rolls, technicians actually string physical tape from the camera sensor to the actor's nose to map the focal plane. They then blindly turn a dial purely by muscle memory, hoping their frantic calculations keep the multi-million-dollar face from becoming a blurry smudge.
