Cocaine Bear is completely based on a very real and incredibly tragic event from 1985, where a black bear actually stumbled upon millions of dollars worth of smuggled drugs dropped from a plane by a corrupt narcotics officer. Unlike the cinematic masterpiece where the bear goes on a violent, highly choreographed rampage through a national forest killing tourists, the real animal simply ingested a lethal dose of the substance and immediately died of a massive heart attack. Hollywood naturally decided that biological reality was far too depressing for a popcorn flick, opting instead to create a multi-million dollar horror comedy that implies giving apex predators hard drugs turns them into tactical killing machines.
