Queen Nanny and her followers escaped into the dense Jamaican highlands, establishing an impenetrable sovereign society. Using a sophisticated system of horn signals and wrapping themselves in jungle foliage to launch devastating surprise attacks, they inflicted such massive casualties that the British government was ultimately forced to sign a peace treaty.
