The sprawling epic about an eco-terrorist mercenary with a giant sword fighting a silver-haired demigod originally had a very different vibe. Early drafts pitched the story as a hardboiled detective thriller set entirely in a fictional version of New York. The only surviving element of this noir concept is a very specific brooding attitude.
